How Do the Different Types of Engines Work?

A compression-ignition engine is a two-stroke internal combustion engine in which each stroke of the piston compresses, or squeezes out, the air-fuel mixture in two cylinders. The air/fuel mixture is ignited and burns in the chamber, producing heat. The hot gases then expand through one or more intake valves into a cylinder where they are compressed by the piston moving up and down in the cylinder head, producing power. The piston then moves back down into a cylinder where the expanding gases cause it to move reciprocally, turning the crankshaft and driving the vehicle’s wheels.
